DBT advise that:
The Product Regulation and Metrology Bill will:
- Preserve the UK’s status as a global leader in product regulation, supporting businesses and protecting consumers.
- Ensure the UK is better placed to address modern day safety issues, harness opportunities that deliver economic growth, and ensure a level playing field between the high street and online marketplaces.
- Enable the UK to maintain high product standards, supporting businesses and economic growth, by allowing the UK Parliament the power to update relevant laws.
The Bill has a broad scope aimed at providing powers to manage the UKs product regulatory framework for many manufactured goods. It will cover products such as toys, fireworks, cosmetics, machinery as well as metrology, which is essential for the safe operation of critical national infrastructure.
This is an enabling Bill which provides broad powers to enable the UK to; update and amend relevant product regulations; respond to new hazards and threats; maintain high safety standards; make specific provision for online marketplaces; update enforcement requirements; and update the legal metrology framework.
