The British Compressed Gases Association (BCGA) has raised concerns over the misuse of large canisters of nitrous oxide, which are being imported illegitimately into the country.

According to the national trade body, the nitrous oxide canisters, of approximately 600ml, have no legitimate use in the UK.

The BCGA successfully campaigned for a ban on consumer sales of the gas, which was classified as a Class C drug in 2023 under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, while protecting legitimate uses such as in hospitals, hospitality, food and motorsport.

After consistently warning about the health implications of the misuse of the gas, it is now concerned over the impacts of exposure to higher volumes of the substance from the larger canister sizes.

The BCGA has also warned that improper disposal of the canisters is putting lives at risk, after multiple explosions at waste management sites caused by the pressurised containers in incinerators.

Chris Street, President of the BCGA, said: “We are aware of the increasing reports of larger containers, of around 600ml, finding their way into the UK illegitimately.

“The BCGA continues to campaign for all appropriate measures to address the illegal supply of nitrous oxide, whilst ensuring the legislation still allows for legitimate uses in the medical, food, chemical and sports industries.”

Abuse of nitrous oxide can be fatal, causing hypoxia, asphyxiation and shock, with long-term abuse associated with severe damage to the central nervous system, which can lead to paralysis, as well as permanent loss of feeling and motor control in the limbs.
