About us

BCGA's Mission is to promote safety in the use, storage, transportation and handling of industrial, food and medical gases, which we do in part through our many respected publications. These are kept up-to-date through regular updates and may be viewed using the publications tab above.

BCGA is a not-for-profit Trade Association, representing the interests of 100+ member companies:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of bulk liquid and cylinder gases.
  • Manufacturers of cylinders, vessels and tanks for their storage and distribution.
  • Manufacturers of equipment for controlling the application and use of gases.
  • Installers of distribution pipework and systems.
  • Providers of specialist safety, health, quality, inspection and training services.

The British Compressed Gases Association (BCGA) was established in 1971, having previously existed as the British Acetylene Manufacturers Association, which was originally formed in 1901.

Compressed Gases

The term "industrial gases" refers to gases such as acetylene, argon, ammonia, carbon dioxide, chlorine, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, etc., used in a wide range of applications. It also covers speciality gases. Industrial gases are vital for the manufacture of information technology components, as well as key UK industrial sectors including steelmaking, welding, chemical processing, electronics and the scientific sectors. They also help keep homes warm and water clean.

Food gases ensure food stays nutritious, appealing and affordable - while medical gases play a critical role in applications including respiratory care, pain therapies and anaesthesia.

A condition of BCGA membership is to comply with and uphold the standards and practices approved within BCGA publications. We do not accredit, approve or otherwise recommend individual members and any parties who trade with BCGA members should apply their own diligence in the normal ways. Trading partners can at least be sure that BCGA members operate to current best practice.

Members may follow the work of the Technical Committee and its various Technical Sub-Committees within the members area of the website.
