The BCGA Annual Conference brings professionals together from the compressed gases industry, to be updated on the latest developments, current issues and association news. Our full programme reviews the BCGA Technical Committees publications and achievements, along with other key note speakers presenting on industry matters. Attending the conference offers delegates, whether member or non-member, the annual opportunity to network with like-minded people.

Meet the Speakers

Helen North – Dangerous Goods Division, UK Department for Transport (DfT)

Helen is head of the Frameworks and Engagement Team within DfT’s Dangerous Goods Division.

Prior to her current role, Helen was seconded to the post of Hazardous Cargoes Policy Specialist within the Environmental Policy Branch of the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) which widened her experience beyond road and rail. Preceding to this position she was the Senior International Representation and Policy Adviser in the Dangerous Goods Division of the Department for Transport since 2008.

Lord Karan Bilimoria CBE DL – President, CBI

Karan Bilimoria is the founder of Cobra Beer, Chairman of the Cobra Beer Partnership Limited, a Joint Venture with Molson Coors, and Chairman of Molson Coors Cobra India.

Lord Bilimoria is the Founding Chairman of the UK India Business Council, a Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London, a former Chancellor of Thames Valley University (now the University of West London); he was the youngest University Chancellor in the UK when appointed. Karan was a former Senior Non-Executive Director of the Booker Group now TESCO PLC (2007-2016); he is one of the first two visiting entrepreneurs at the University of Cambridge; he is a founding member of the Prime Minister of India’s Global Advisory Council. In 2006, Karan Bilimoria was appointed the Lord Bilimoria of Chelsea, making him the first ever Zoroastrian Parsi to sit in the House of Lords.

Dr Melissa Wang, Greenpeace

A Senior Scientist, Dr Melissa Wang has been leading Greenpeace science-policy interface work on global governance of chemicals, waste and plastic. Invited by the United Nations Environment Programmes (UNEP), she served on several steering committees to guide UNEP work in these areas. She also advise DEFRA work through the Chemical Stakeholder Forum and horizon scanning practices. She is keen to explore with stakeholders further synergies and nexus among different environmental areas, e.g. climate change, biodiversity, agriculture, chemicals, waste and pollution.

Dr Susan Scurlock MBE, Primary Engineer

Dr Susan Scurlock MBE founded Primary Engineer in 2005 after training as a Graphic Designer and later as a Secondary School Teacher. She has developed a sophisticate programme of award-winning teacher training courses ranging from one day courses to master’s level postgraduate certificates. She has helped to design national competitions, ‘If you were an engineer what would you do?’, STATWARS and educational programmes involving industry, universities, councils, and professional engineering institutions.

She is the recipient of the Royal Academy of Engineering 2020 Rooke Award, three Honorary Doctorates and was awarded an MBE in the Queens New Year’s Honours list in recognition of her work in engineering education.

 

Ashish Chaudhary, UCT – Fluid Solutions

With over 20 years of experience, Ashish has extensive global experience in bringing together strategic thinking, operating experience and deep domain knowledge in the oil and gas industries. He has held several positions – engineering, operations, marketing and sales – over his career working for Schlumberger, Bliss Anand Group, and most recently as the Management Consultant for Infiswift Technologies in Houston, TX.

In his current role at UCT – Fluid Solutions, he is in charge of the Smart (IoT) Valves portfolio, leading strategic growth planning and helping customers move towards digital transformation and also enable the use of technology to enhance safety and improve operational efficiencies.

David Harman, The Coaching Team

Creator and cornerstone of The Coaching Team, David has been specialising in people development for over 20 years. His work involves creating and facilitating team, leadership and individual development programmes throughout the world.

David’s career started in the Army, based in the Far East serving with the Gurkhas. He completed a variety of roles from the recruitment and training of soldiers in Nepal and Hong Kong, to representing the United Nations in South Korea.

David then moved into the training and hospitality industry, where as a Director with Style Conferences Limited he led a variety of teams in supporting organisations such as Xerox and British Airways in operating their corporate training centres. Here, he developed a sound understanding of business development and leading change; Style Conferences enjoyed extensive growth prior to being acquired by the Rentokil Initial Group and then De Vere Venues.
